My date with Frank, Henry and Julian

.

My mind is in 10 different places. I'm squeezing in this post, just because. So please excuse the randomness of this post.

I can't believe how busy my month of August is and will be. August is breastfeeding month and I've got a few TV guestings and speaking engagements lined up, plus a trip to Mindanao. On top of that, I've got UZ shoots and other shoots for my projects. It's all good. I am so thankful for the work and opportunity to help. It's all very exciting for me. I just wish my Nikon D90 could be resurrected. I can't believe we got a lemon and it's not being replaced. Sigh... I need a DSLR for my Mindanao visit. :( Oh well...

In the homefront...

Sophia is now engrossed in reading books with no pictures. I am so thrilled for her. She's only 7. Last week she asked specifically for a book with no pictures "so I can use my imagination." Proud mama that I am, I rushed to National Bookstore to pick an age-appropriate book. Patrick picked up Judy Blume. And I gasped. "I think she's too young for Judy Blume!" Did any of you read Are you there God its me, Margaret? I'm not ready to go there yet. So I got her a book about a powerful charm bracelet and other worlds beyond the sky. It came with collectible charms. She loves it. Her song of the week is Memory, still on Cats. Haha.

Lily just discovered "Justin Beaver" and is singing Baby, Baby, Oh.... She is very very cute. Yesterday she pranced around the house wearing her old flower girl gown. I'm indulging her because I'm afraid one day she will wake up and not be a princess anymore.

Stella, wow! She's recovering from being so sick a couple of weeks ago. But despite the weight loss she managed to master the skill of walking. It's funny. She walks like E.T. She totally looks like an infant but she walks. Her favourite song is Beyonce's Single Ladies. It's my fault. I saw that You Tube video of a baby dancing to Beyonce's video. It was the cutest. Now Stella does the same thing. I'm serious. She can dance like Beyonce.

What pop songs do your kids listen to?

I'm just glad I still get a lot of time with the kids these days. It's hard to explain to them why I have to work though. The more I stay home, the more they get used to me being a stay-at-home mom. And work becomes a hindrance for them. So I have to explain...

I am reminded of our vacation again. Sorry to keep dwelling on our vacation. I have tonnes of photos from the trip. And it is my way of keeping myself inspired and fresh-thinking. Well towards the end of our stay in Toronto I was still hungry for inspiration and ideas. My everyday was spent caring for the kids, sneaking out to shop with my sister while they were playing or napping. But I wasn't getting my fill of "whatever" it was my artistic soul was craving for. Once in a while I need to see beautiful architecture. I need to experience being in a different space. My family totally supports this about me. They know I need my fill of beautiful places. So they took the kids the entire day and gave me my "day off."

I spent my alone time here, at the AGO. And that is the Henry Moore sculpture that I love.

My favourite space at the AGO is the Henry Moore sculpture court. It is vast with many of his plaster casts and some bronzes. I can sit there all day. Bawal to take pictures. This is my lousy attempt.

I sat here and just watched this huge painting by my favourite contemporary artist Julian Schnabel, Portrait of Bella and Lolita, a commissioned work. I vowed to myself that one day I will own a Schnabel work, and well *wink. Now I just want to meet him.

And then I challenged myself to understand Yoko Ono's art.

There was an audio guide with discussions on "Is this art? What is art?" Zzzheavy.

Alright...

The AGO has a fantastic collection. But I was really there to see what Frank Gehry had done to the old AGO. And this just took my breath away. I almost cried. (Skip this if you think I'm O.A.)

The new Frank Gehry redesigned AGO is beyond words. It offered a lot of city views and open spaces for public gathering. Did you know that Frank Gehry was actually born and raised in Toronto? But this is his first building in Canada! I was mesmerized. He's transformed the AGO into something that really makes sense as a downtown art gallery. It wasn't just a building anymore. It was really part of the urban landscape. Each angle had a story and a new revelation.

This is the Baroque Stair. It links the new contemporary tower to the original 1920's AGO. Going through this was an unforgettable experience. It wasn't simply a staircase that got you from A to B. I stopped several times just to take it all in.

Gasp!

Looking up. This was 11 storeys high.

The part of the stairs that juts out into the Grange Park. Here you really feel part of downtown Toronto. It has a wide panoramic view of the city.

Italian Gallery at the AGO
Here I am attempting to take a self-timed photo in the Galleria Italia facing the north.

Italian Gallery at the AGO
This is a sculpture gallery that juts out into the street. When you walk within it you get to experience face to face the brownstones across the street. The wood used here is not just decorative, but structural.

Italian Gallery at the AGO
Twenty four Italian families supported this gallery and you can see their names in each of the posts. The space is breathtaking. Even from the outside, you can see in. I wish all art galleries could be placed in the urban context that way... so that it's more inclusive rather than snooty-exclusive.

And that's how I recharged myself a few days before coming back to Manila.

We all need alone time. I used to feel guilty for taking breaks from the kids. But really, we all need to recharge and feed our souls.

How about you? What do you do to recharge?
